About the role:The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will utilise their lived experiences to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers accessing the Emergency Department, mental health services, homeless health and alcohol or drug services. The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will work closely alongside clinical teams to support consumers in developing hope, autonomy and purpose and support engagement with family and community.The Peer Worker will encourage culture, spirituality, and identity and basic needs work, roles, and responsibilities; education; physical health; and mental health. The role will also ensure that clinical settings are a culturally safe and welcoming environment for all Aboriginal consumers.The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and engage and involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community when drawing from lived experience.The position is supported to complete appropriate training and education within the scope of the role. It is an expectation of this role that candidates have completed or are willing to undertake appropriate training (E.g. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Cert IV in Mental Health) as part of their employment with the service. As per the award the position will be remunerated dependent upon the appointee’s qualifications and experience.Aboriginal Mental Health Peer Workers use their personal journey to support consumers by providing individual consultations, education and group interventions aimed at facilitating recovery principles of hope, choice, self- determination and social connectedness.The Aboriginal Mental Health Peer Worker works alongside clinicians and is an integral part of the clinical team, contributing to care-planning and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the best outcome for the consumer.Our Culture:

2. To be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he/she/they lives, or has lived. This is a genuine occupational qualification as described under Section 14(d) of the Anti- Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).3. Completion of the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work OR willingness to complete same.4. Good written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills e.g. ability to communicate their personal experience of recovery.5. Understanding of the issues and concerns of mental health service users and able to maintain professional boundaries.6. Be able to demonstrate an ability to support the delivery of culturally safe service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers.7. Being able to use your own lived experience of mental health illness to support people experiencing challenges with a mental illness within a personal recovery context.8.
