The Role:We are looking for 2 suitably experienced Consultant General Surgeons to take up permanent full-time positions. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest/experience in and/or certification in Colo-rectal Surgery. This will complement the existing permanent General Surgeons.You will play an active role in ensuring that Surgical services provided by are of the highest standard and delivered in a reliable and cost-effective manner given available resources. The role entails management of acute and elective surgical conditions both in adults and children.The candidate should have a strong interest, and demonstrated expertise, in Upper GI Surgery as part of their General Surgical Scope of Practice. The successful candidate will assist with the education and supervision of surgical trainees at PHO, RMO and intern level, of medical students and of other medical staff.Senior staff members are expected to take part in the day-to-day management of surgical services, together with junior staff, on a rotational basis. The role includes active participation in patient safety, clinical audit, research and service planning activities. An ability to function in a collaborative and collegial team environment is essential.Currently approximately 3165 surgical cases p.a are performed in the two operating theatres with around 1100 endoscopies performed yearly. At present there is a 31-bed mixed General Surgical and Medical Ward and a four bed High Dependency Unit.The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions. Surgeries that can be performed in a level 3 CSCF facility include all procedures classified as having a surgical complexity I or II, all surgical complexity III procedures with low to medium anaesthetic risk and complexity IV procedures with low anaesthetic risk.Hospital:This position will be based at a growing regional hospital with a total capacity of 100 beds and treatment spaces, that currently offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services. Surgery performed at this hospital is consistent with the Level 3 Clinical Services Capability Framework for Surgical Services. The hospital caters to a regional population of approximately 65,000 incorporating smaller rural/coastal settlements within its catchment area.The hospital provides a range of services including general medicine, emergency medicine and surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, high dependency and coronary care, medical imaging, palliative care, pathology and mental health services. In addition, there are additional services delivered via outreach/community-based facilities.The aim of this hospital is to develop a centre of excellence in general surgical procedures, endoscopy, skin cancers including melanoma, hernia repairs and abdominal surgery.Location:An excellent location for families with wonderful sporting facilities and excellent private and state schools. Lots of views and hills, it also has a feeling of prosperity, is clean and modern.This is a sub-tropical climate and its proximity to islands, waterways and beaches provides year-round boating, fishing, swimming, and surfing. The climate and oceanic setting also yield's delicious seafood including the famous crab. The city has its own unique appearance with a gorgeous harbour, the environment is so clean and green.You will be spoiled by the many natural attractions including islands, beaches and waterways offering an appealing lifestyle. This dynamic regional city is full of surprise and unexpected experience!!Brisbane is just a short 1hour flight.Skills/Qualifications:

Mandatory qualification/s: MBBS or equivalent eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Registration or eligibility for registration as a Specialist in General Surgery with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA). In general, this will require Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in the specialty of General Surgery.
Accreditation by Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) in upper and lower GI endoscopy is essential.
Expertise in Laparoscopic Surgery is essential.
Expertise in Upper GI Surgery is desirable
