An exciting opportunity waits for a skilled and experienced Laboratory Trades Assistant within our clients esteemed Institute's Facilities Management Department. As a Laboratory Trades Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting FM technicians in the service, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities, ensuring general cleanliness and aesthetics, and contributing to the smooth running of relevant activities within the Institute.Key Responsibilities:
  • Disposal of Scientific Equipment: Coordinate and supervise the removal and disposal process of designated assets within the lab environment, such as incubators and biosafety cabinets. Ensure compliance with relevant procedures, handle decontamination, and manage necessary documentation.
  • Disposal of Refrigeration Equipment: Oversee the proper disposal of refrigeration equipment, including freezers and fridges. Coordinate with relevant departments to follow asset identification, degas, decontamination, and de-labelling protocols before disposal.
  • Disposal of Electronic Waste: Coordinate, facilitate, and supervise the collection and disposal of electronic waste, including computers, screens, TVs, kitchen appliances, and white goods, in compliance with clients’ processes and procedures.
  • Fleet Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of fleet cars, organize and facilitate routine servicing, and respond to breakdowns, such as replacing tires, as needed.
  • Ground Maintenance: Coordinate and carry out ground maintenance tasks based on the site's requirements in accordance with the preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Cleaning Activities: Consult, coordinate, and carry out general cleaning works, including cleaning of plant rooms and freezer rooms, as per the preventive maintenance schedule.
Personal Qualities:
  • Strong planning, organizing, and coordinating abilities for executing maintenance activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with various stakeholders and manage contractors/suppliers effectively.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, triage workloads, and handle multiple tasks, fault finding, diagnosis, and problem-solving.
  • Reasonable understanding of technical information on lab-based equipment and plant during maintenance activities.
  • A commitment to uphold the Institute's values.
Knowledge and Skillsets:
  • Relevant trade skillsets.
  • Elevated work platform (EWP) certification is preferred.
  • Forklift license is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Office 365 email and calendar applications.
  • Ability to apply education and training to conduct non-technical maintenance activities.
  • Capability to learn software systems for general activities, including purchasing, asset maintenance, and employee management.
  • Adherence to policies and guidelines through documented procedural processes, including asset disposal and laboratory cleaning.
  • Willingness to perform other departmental/organizational functions as needed, such as building engineering emergency response.
