This is an exciting role providing therapeutic and casework services to adults and children who have been sexually assaulted, and their non-offending family members and carers. As part of a multidisciplinary health care team, this role provides quality services to clients of Northern Sydney Local Health District to meet their health and wellbeing needs. The role will partner with the Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) Services to develop a deeper level of awareness and understanding of how to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islanders who may engage with PARVAN specific services.Employment Type: Permanent Full Time

Where you'll be working
You will be based in the Community Health Centre on the Royal North Shore Hospital Campus.What you'll be doingWorking within a strength based, family centred and culturally centred trauma informed approach, this role provides therapeutic and casework services to adults and children who have been sexually assaulted, and their non-offending family members and carers. As part of a multidisciplinary health care team, this role provides quality services to clients of Northern Sydney Local Health District to meet their health and wellbeing needs.The role will partner with the Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) Services to develop a deeper level of awareness and understanding of how to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders who may engage with PARVAN specific services. Working towards cultural responsiveness is a responsibility of all PARVAN staff.Northern Sydney Local Health District’s PARVAN Service, in which the Sexual Assault Service (SAS) sits seeks to provide a culturally safe service for people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander families and communities.This role will have a professional development plan in place that will provide the opportunity for work-based development which allows for progression through the Award levels in accordance with the position holder’s skill acquisition.People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background encouraged to apply.Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:
  • Must be Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such under Section 14(d) of the NSW Anti Discrimination Act 1977 with knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Aboriginal Qualification Pathway - Graduate Certificate in Human and Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma) or other relevant counselling degree deemed appropriate by the employer. Social Workers must have eligibility for the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and post graduate experience at a minimum of level 2 or above. Psychologists must have a four year degree in psychology, being a three year degree with a fourth year honours in psychology; or a qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
  • Demonstrated understanding and skills in providing culturally responsive child centred, family focussed counselling, support and case management to individuals who have experienced sexual assault and/ or other forms of interpersonal violence and their families. Demonstrated ability to create connections, engagement and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to affect outcomes with an understanding of intergenerational trauma, contextual and causal factors for violence, abuse and neglect and the principles of cultural safety. Demonstrated experience participating in and/or leading quality improvement activities, service development and evaluation.
