Job Description:Casual position commencing February 2026Friendly and supportive team environmentOngoing training and development opportunitiesAbout the RoleTo complete a main research project to present at a national endocrine or diabetes meeting and to submit the results of the study for publication. This research will be overseen by a senior endocrinologist within the Departments of Endocrinology and Medicine. There is an expectation to enrol in a higher degree, such as a Master of Philosophy, through the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and to comply with the terms and conditions of the requirements to complete such a degree. The clinical component of the position is outlined below. It is expected that candidates for the position will receive a stipend equivalent to a University of Melbourne Postgraduate scholarship.At the discretion of the Director of Endocrinology, to provide inpatient and outpatient care, and consultative services on clinical problems related to diabetes mellitus, general endocrinology, pituitary disorders and metabolic bone disease, and duties as outlined below (noting that clinical activities will be in keeping with the research focus of the position). In the past, this position has been recognised as an elective year of endocrine training by the RACP endocrine advanced trainee committee. Some of the expected duties involved in this position include:To complete a research project as described aboveTo participate in research and academic activities in the Department of Endocrinology and the Department of Medicine.Below is a list of duties that you may be required to participate in at the discretion of the Director of EndocrinologyProvision of proper care to patients admitted for the investigation of endocrine disorders;Liaison with other units on the proper care of patients with diabetes mellitus and other endocrine problemsLiaison with diabetes educators, dieticians, and other health professionalsSupervision of a second-year resident on rotationAttendance in outpatient clinics in diabetes, endocrinology, pituitary, lipid and metabolic bone disordersOverseeing tests of endocrine function on an outpatient basisReporting of endocrine tests under supervisionTeaching medical students and hospital resident staffParticipation in research and audit projectsRegular presentations at the Department’s weekly clinical meeting and various other clinical meetingsAttendance at grand rounds and journal club meetingsParticipation in the after-hours roster on the call roster at the discretion of the director of endocrinologyParticipation in clinical trialsTo assist the director with organising educational activities within the departmentTo attend off-campus endocrine clinicsSuccessful candidates will commence their post with SVHM on Monday 02 February 2026 – Sunday 31 January 2027.Classifications for this position will be as a Casual Medical Officer (relevant experience rate + 25%)What you will bring:Full working rights in AustraliaHold current AHPRA registrationMBBS or equivalentHold a current, or willing to undergo a satisfactory National Police CheckHave a commitment to deliver the best in patient care and safetyDemonstrated experience applying medical knowledge towards sound clinical diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patientsDemonstrated effective communication with patients, relatives, staff and colleaguesAbout the Endocrinology UnitThe Department of Endocrinology at SVHM actively participates in the teaching program for medical undergraduates, residents and registrars in advanced training. The Department also participates in clinical and laboratory research in topics related to diabetes mellitus, pituitary disorders, and metabolic bone diseases. The Department of Endocrinology works in close liaison with the neurosurgery unit, the endocrine surgery unit, the renal unit and the nuclear medicine department.
