Spanning the 15th to 21st centuries it comprises some 8000 Australian and International works.Located at the University's main campus at Bedford Park, 12 kilometres south of Adelaide's central business district, the Museum was formally established in 1978 to house and manage an expanding art collection first initiated for education purposes in 1966.Today, FUMA serves its immediate and wider community as an academic resource and dynamic site of cultural and intellectual exchange. Our programs stimulate critical and creative engagements with art, knowledge, and processes of making with the aim of enriching experiences and understandings of the world.About the RoleAs a crucial member of our small and dynamic team, the Curator plays a central role in FUMA's artistic programs, engagement strategies, and the documentation, development, and care of our museum's permanent collections, which include a significant holding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.In the role of Curator, you will be responsible for researching, evaluating, and recommending acquisitions, as well as curating scholarly exhibitions for presentation in the FUMA Gallery, satellite spaces across campus, and touring venues. Your duties will extend to conducting research on artworks, artists, and art historical topics, contributing to exhibition catalogues, academic forums, and public programs, while employing innovative interpretation strategies to engage and expand our audience.Your role will also be pivotal in driving FUMA's museum-based teaching and learning programs, fostering relationships with academic staff, and facilitating student access to the collections. Additionally, you will provide functional and line management supervision to our Collections and Exhibitions Assistant, as well as oversee interns and volunteers involved in collection activities.About YouYou will be an accomplished curator with a strategic and innovative mindset, well-versed in developing and delivering intellectually rigorous exhibitions, managing collections, and engaging with the public. Your strong communication skills, both written and verbal, coupled with your adept research abilities and comprehensive understanding of contemporary curatorial practice, will be essential. Demonstrating initiative and skilfully prioritizing competing demands will be second nature to you, all while maintaining a keen attention to detail in every aspect of your work.To be successful in this position, you will also demonstrate:
  • Completion of a degree in Art History, Museum Studies or a related field.
  • Broad knowledge of relevant industry standards, policies, practices, protocols, compliance, and risk factors.
  • Broad knowledge of art methods and materials, ability to assess the condition of artworks and collection needs.
