
Principal Hydrology & Drainage Engineer

- Lead the planning, design, and delivery of hydrology and drainage solutions for major transport infrastructure projects across Australia
- Oversee flood risk assessments, catchment analysis, and stormwater management strategies in accordance with Australian Standards and Austroads guidelines
- Manage the development of concept and detailed designs for road and rail infrastructure, ensuring integration with surface and subsurface drainage systems, culverts, waterways, and flood protection infrastructure
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to multidisciplinary engineering teams, ensuring high-quality, sustainable, and innovative design outcomes
- Review and approve hydrological and hydraulic designs, ensuring compliance with local authority requirements and environmental impact assessment protocols
- Utilise industry-standard modelling tools (e.g. 12D, DRAINS, TUFLOW, GIS) to perform and validate complex drainage and water management designs
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and key stakeholders (e.g. TfNSW, TMR) to manage project deliverables, budgets, and timelines
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of design practices, digital engineering integration, and the adoption of BIM technologies within hydrology and drainage projects
- Support bid preparation, resource planning, and technical inputs for project proposals and business development efforts
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in hydrology, drainage, and water management for major infrastructure projects in Australia
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, Austroads guidelines, and relevant local authority requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in flood risk assessment, drainage design (longitudinal and transverse), and water catchment analysis
- Proven experience in the delivery of concept and detailed design for major road and/or rail infrastructure
- Experience in managing and reviewing designs for:
- Culverts, channels, and waterway crossings
- Stormwater networks and flood protection systems * Familiarity with environmental and hydrological impact assessments
- Ability to lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams, provide technical guidance, and deliver high-quality outputs
- Proficiency with relevant design and modeling software:
- Advanced understanding of hydrology and hydraulics modeling techniques
- Experience working on major projects with state authorities (TfNSW, TMR, etc.)
- Proven ability to manage design budgets, schedules, and resource planning
- Knowledge of digital engineering and BIM integration in hydrology and drainage design
