IntroductionInformation and Communication Technologies (ICT) plays a critical role in enabling Defence military and business operations. The Defence Digital Group (DDG) oversees over $2 billion of ICT expenditure per annum and the Australian Government is investing over $5 billion in new ICT capabilities in the national security sector over the coming decade.Our ideal candidates will have a strong background in successful delivery of significant business outcomes in complex and large scale environments, together with a well-developed ability to negotiate outcomes in a contested environment. You will require astute judgement and political awareness, and an ability to influence and provide compelling argument to Defence Senior Leadership. They will have outstanding judgement, strategic awareness, and parliamentary and media acumen.As part of this selection process, a Merit Pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill current vacancies and any similar vacancies that may arise over the next 18 months.The RoleThe Defence Digital Group (DDG) is seeking outstanding senior executives to lead various roles (Enterprise Digital Capability, Systems Delivery, Portfolio Management and Commercial) within the Group. DDG is responsible for ensuring Defence has a dependable, secure and integrated Defence Information Environment to support military operations and wider Defence business.As an Assistant Secretary you will be responsible for:
  • Lead and manage a Branch providing quality integrated group level effects in support of strategic directions
  • Managing the procedures and processes for ICT life cycle capability management and the support of DDG directed outcomes
  • Providing strategic leadership to directorates within DDG and to broader staff within the Group and Department; and
  • Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of
resultsTo be a strong contender for these roles, you will need to have strong leadership experience working in a dynamic strategic environment. Candidates should have a diverse set of skills across ICT, capability lifecycle management, resource management and commercial acumen to meet the demands of the positions being sort. You will have demonstrated experience in managing large and diverse workforces, and have a demonstrated ability to provide:
  • Capability outcomes supporting high cost, highly visible, large scale and complex programs and projects;
  • Program and capability sustainment for integrated effects; and
  • Strategy, design and technology solutions at scale.
You will have strong communication skills and an ability to communicate highly technical information to non-technical senior Defence executives, Ministers and the Government more generally. An understanding of Defence, particularly the acquisition and sustainment functions of major program delivery, is desirable.In short, we are looking for a person who is:
