The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (DPED) teams consists of Paediatric endocrinologists, Diabetes Clinical Nurse Consultants, Dietitians, Social workers, and a Clinical Psychologist. In addition to the assessment and ongoing management for newly diagnosed patients and patients with existing diabetes, DPED offers stabilisation programs for newly diagnosed and existing patients with sub-optimal control, continuous blood glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy initiation and review and a school diabetes education program.About the RoleThe Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Educator - Diabetes in Schools Program role is part of the multidisciplinary Department of Paediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes (DPED) established to support young people and families living with diabetes.This role is responsible for provision of level 3 face to face training for school staff to assist them in supporting children and young people with their diabetes management whilst at school. Your expertise in diabetes management will ensure young people and families are well supported to attend school and participate fully in school activities. The Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Educator - Diabetes In Schools incumbent will be required to travel to schools to deliver level 3 Diabetes In Schools Program training to school staff as per the Diabetes In Schools Program model.The role will be responsible for:
  • Presenting Level 3 Diabetes in School Program onsite to primary/high schools
  • Delivery of patient and family-centered care and education to children and adolescents with diabetes, including supporting the transition from insulin injections to pump therapy, including upgrades
  • Offering telephone advice for insulin adjustments and sick day management.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care
  • Liaising with primary and community healthcare providers and professional agencies involved in diabetes management
  • Developing and maintaining accurate records and activity data for all clinical based activity
  • Contributing to the development and review of the paediatric diabetes service
  • Collaborating with other education providers to ensure streamlined clinical care
Your attributes and desired experience:
  • Post Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education
  • Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Credentialed Diabetes Educator
  • Significant experience in paediatric diabetes education
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)
  • Proficient in Hybrid Closed Loop Insulin Pump Therapy and Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems commencement, patient education and review
  • Current acute clinical diabetes experience in the hospital setting with the paediatric/adolescent population including those with Type 1 / 2 Diabetes, Neonatal Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes, Steroid Induced Diabetes
