In return you will be a valued team member, be offered flexibility and experience a meaningful career in an exciting, ever-evolving aviation industry.The Role:As the Senior Safety System Specialist (Operational Safety), you will take on significant responsibility for ongoing development and assurance across all sixteen elements of Airservices SMS to ensure that it meets regulatory and legislative requirements, enacts the Board's risk appetite, and effectively manages aviation operational safety risk.The role is responsible for:
  • Proactively identifying opportunities to improve the SMS through the conduct of management system assurance reviews, comparative analysis with industry peers, maturity assessments, and maintaining requirements traceability to our regulatory and ICAO obligations.
  • Designing and implementing changes to the management system to optimise both the effectiveness of our safety management practices and the useability of the framework.
  • Understanding the competency requirements required to apply the SMS and developing solutions to build and manage the organisation's capability.
Current key focuses for the team that the role will contribute to include:
  • Transition from a manual paper-based management system to online workflow-enabled processes, for the primary purposes of reducing the required process knowledge, automating low-level assurance activities, and improving the visibility and management of the relationships between the thousands of registered changes managed by the organisation every year.
  • Further embed safety management practices that consider the success-side of risk and focus on increasing our services' capacity to achieve safe outcomes.
  • Develop refined approaches to prioritising our organisation-wide change agenda to optimise the safety risk reduction achieved by our investments.
  • Improve our methods of aggregating and apportioning risk throughout a complex system.
Please see the link below to view the full Position Description:The Person:To be successful in this role you will have a background that has provided you exposure to the majority of elements found in a typical SMS, combined with significant experience in specific element/s that you have specialised in and developed a high level of knowledge. This experience should be in the context of managing the safety of a services (e.g. rail, aviation, oil & gas), not Workplace Health and Safety.Ideally your experience will include time in applier, assurance, and framework owner roles; however, this is not essential if you can demonstrate an ability to understand the needs of the different users of an SMS.You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional yet highly personable approach to establishing collaborative and productive working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.You will have the capability to
  • conduct system and assurance reviews to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • develop effective and efficient processes and/or methods to introduce new or refined safety management practices.
  • design and deliver training, artefacts and/or tools that build the required competency for SMS users.
Whilst not essential, experience in identifying and developing technology solutions across web-based, mobile and Windows platforms will be highly regarded.Team Culture:The Senior Safety System Specialist (Operational Safety) is part of the small Safety System (Operational Safety) team with the primary focus on maintaining the SMS from an Operational Safety perspective. However, the role interacts closely with the member of the broader Safety team. This team comprise of members split between Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane, working in operational safety, human factors, WHS and training quality disciplines.   • Significant experience in the application or assurance of an element/s of the SMS to the level that sees you regarded as a specialist.
  • Exposure to a broad range of elements found in a typical SMS to the level where you have developed a high level of awareness of their requirements and process.
  • Experience conducting audit / assurance related activities.
  • Experience developing processes/methods to implement safety management practices.
  • Experience developing and delivering training.
  • Knowledge of the safety regulatory environment in which Airservices operates.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills including a strong capacity to communicate with influence to diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly developed research, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Highly Desirable
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, aviation, safety management or related field.
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative information management mechanisms (with a focus on enhancing system utility, user satisfaction, and data capture)
