So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.Drive technical strategy across the Payments & Fraud subgroup, establishing architectural patterns and best practices that scale across all three teamsDesign and implement sophisticated payment routing systems that optimise for success rates, costs, and risk mitigation across global marketsLead complex technical initiatives that span multiple teams and services, coordinating efforts to deliver cohesive solutionsEstablish comprehensive testing frameworks for multi-currency payment flows and cross-border transaction scenariosMentor and guide engineers across the subgroup, sharing expertise in payment systems, fraud prevention, and distributed architectureCollaborate with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutionsDrive innovation in payment infrastructure, exploring emerging technologies like AI-assisted development to accelerate market expansionYou're probably a match ifExtensive experience with one or more of the following: Payment systems architecture, gateway integrations, payment routing, multi-currency handling, machine learning and rule-based fraud detection, payment and contract fraud prevention and security best practices, compliance and regulatory requirements for payment processing in multiple jurisdictions.Deep expertise in distributed, event-driven and microservice architectures, with proven experience scaling low-latency, fault-tolerant transactional systemsProven track record of technical leadership across multiple engineering teams, with experience driving architectural decisionsExcellent communication skills for collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholdersPassion for innovation and exploring new technologies, such as A,I to solve complex challengesAbout the teamThis role directly supports Canva's mission to enable anyone, anywhere to access and pay for Canva services by establishing a robust, scalable payment infrastructure. By creating standardised integration patterns and intelligent payment routing systems, this role will accelerate market expansion, reduce payment failures, and improve the overall user experience across all payment touchpoints.The work will unlock new markets more efficiently, reduce engineering overhead for payment integrations, and establish the foundation for AI-assisted payment method development - all critical capabilities for Canva's continued global growth.As a Staff Engineer in Payments & Fraud, you will operate as a strategic technical leader with a depth of context in our payments & fraud domains who drives change across multiple teams and groups at Canva. This role requires sharp engineering craft and exceptional cross-specialty collaboration skills to gain buy-in from diverse stakeholders including product managers, finance, compliance, and engineering teams.
