The projectFire is a key process in grassy ecosystems, promoting growth and reproduction, structural dynamics, and nutrient cycling. It also has deep cultural meaning for First Nations People. In south-eastern Australia, European invasion has meant the exclusion of fire and introduction of hard-hooved herbivores to most grassy ecosystems for 150+ years. Reintroducing fire to these landscapes has potential to restore both ecological function and a cultural connection. However, major knowledge gaps surround what characteristics of reintroduced fire regimes would provide positive outcomes for biodiversity and culture.AimsThis study - a collaboration between Bush Heritage Australia and La Trobe University - seeks to understand how planned fire can build resilience and restore function of grassy woodlands. We will study the effects of interactions between fire and macropod grazing, in conjunction with other restoration techniques, on biodiversity (vegetation, invertebrates, and soil function). Our study will focus on a Bush Heritage Australia reserve at Nardoo Hills in north-central Victoria.OutcomesThe project will facilitate research into the ecological and cultural role of fire in grassy woodlands. It will facilitate opportunities for Right-Way Science and collaboration with local Traditional Owners. Importantly, results will provide highly relevant evidence to inform broader fire management plans across Bush Heritage Reserves and other conservation areas across Australia. The successful applicant must meet La Trobe University’s entry requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The successful candidate will receive a $35,000 p.a. (tax-free) scholarship for up to three and a half years and a base funding of $2,500 annually for project expenses. nrmjobs.com.au/job/20026821Date published:29-Aug-2025Closing date:08-Sep-2025
