Requisition ID: REQ598281The Gower Wilson Memorial Hospital on Lord Howe Island is seeking locum General Practitioners to provide services to the island's community and visitors during periods of leave for the island's resident doctor. This is a rare opportunity for a General Practitioner interested in rural and remote practice to provide quality care in an island paradise, supported by South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, visiting specialists and the Lord Howe Island Board.In this role you will provide emergency and inpatient services as require to the island hospital as a GP VMO, as well as general practice medical services in an established private practice (contract issued separately). You will be the only doctor on the island and will be on call 24/7. You will assist the on-call nurse with the ambulance when required (there is no formal ambulance service on the island) as well as dispensing medications from the dispensary.Gower Wilson Memorial Hospital has a three bedspace capacity for periods of observation and is supported by onsite x-ray services. Patients requiring admission are typically transferred to the mainland, and are admitted on the island whilst awaiting retrieval. The hospital is supported by an experienced onsite emergency-trained nurse, two community nurses, and admin staff as part of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.Lord Howe Island is a spectacular and historically important island located less than 2 hours flying time from Sydney. The island offers an enviable lifestyle, perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors. A number of sporting clubs and a golf course are also available. Daily commercial flights connect Lord Howe Island to the mainland. There is a thriving tourist industry with many activities and restaurants and other opportunities to make the most of your time on the island.The island has a welcoming tight-knit community of around 400 residents, and tourists numbers are limited to no more than 400 at any given time.The applicant must be dedicated to a teamwork philosophy and be able to demonstrate their ability to work as a team member within the facility and community.An attractive package inclusive of flights and accommodation will be offered to successful candidates.   • Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide on application AHPRA Registration Number.
  • Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine or Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality General Practice services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to other staff.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
