We deliver recovery-focused programs to consumers with serious mental illnesses across the Victorian justice system, mental health sector and the community – from early intervention and prevention to inpatient care, rehabilitation, and community transition support.Nursing Practice Development UnitForensicare’s Prison Mental Health Services are currently comprised of the following services provided under a Funding and Healthcare Services Agreement with Justice Health.
  • Melbourne Assessment Prison - a 16-bed Acute Assessment Unit.
  • Dame Phyllis Frost Centre – Marrmak a 20-bed mental health residential program.
  • Metropolitan Remand Centre – the Mobile Forensic Mental Health Service.
  • Consultant psychiatric services and Nurse Practitioner services to the larger state-managed prisons.
  • Satellite psychology services at Barwon prison, Kareenga and Marngoneet Correctional Centre
  • Forensicare deliver comprehensive forensic mental health (FMH) services at the Ravenhall Correctional Centre, bed-based service for 75 prisoners.
  • Forensicare provide specialist mental health services at Port Phillip Prison a 30-bed psychosocial rehabilitation unit and a mental health outpatients program.
About the RoleIn Victoria, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is defined as “a registered nurse educated for advanced practice who is an essential member of an interdependent health care team and whose role is determined by the context in which (they) practice.” The position is responsible to the Clinical Director (or delegate) for the standard of extensions to practice. The NP practices with autonomy within an interdisciplinary framework to maximise access to expert forensic mental health nursing care to promote recovery and optimum outcomes for prisoners experiencing mental illness.Your primary functions will be, but not limited to
  • Expert assessment – holistic mental health and risk assessments.
  • Advocacy and access – ensuring timely access to appropriate mental health care and treatment
  • Managing risk – applying risk management principles within a custodial setting.
  • Complex mental health care and treatment – specialised interventions with highly complex and behaviourally challenging prisoners.
  • Transition planning – facilitating successful transition from the prison to the community for prisoners with a mental illness.
Skills and experience
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a division 1 nurse with endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • At least five years of experience in mental health nursing. Forensicare
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake comprehensive mental health and risk assessments and to plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of nursing in a prison environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
  • Ability to initiate and manage projects that support the development of programs and the nursing workforce.
  • A thorough knowledge of the relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated excellent collaborative, leadership, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
