The Engineering and Technology Program, and specifically the Marine Survey and Measurement Group, plays a vital role in enabling scientific discovery across Australia's marine environments.The Hydrochemistry team, based in Hobart, provides essential chemical analysis services to support marine research. Working closely with national and international collaborators, the team delivers high-quality data and insights that underpin oceanographic studies, environmental monitoring, and climate research. Their work spans laboratory-based analysis, fieldwork, and seagoing operations aboard the Marine National Facility research vessel, .As a Senior Analytical Chemist in this team, you will perform laboratory analyses of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and salinity; follow established procedures; and maintain instrumentation. You will take on some higher-level duties and contribute to laboratory management and continuous improvement, prepare for voyages, and engage with clients to ensure data quality. The role will also require providing up to 85 days of seagoing support annually, participating in coastal fieldwork and extended voyages, where you'll oversee sample collection and conduct onboard analyses in collaboration with the science party.If you're passionate about marine science, analytical chemistry, and working in a hands-on, collaborative environment, this is a great opportunity to contribute to impactful research while further developing your skills and domain expertise in both laboratory and field settings!Your high-level duties will include:

Collecting and analysing seawater samples for a range of nutrient species (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, silicate), as well as salinity and dissolved oxygen, both at sea and in the shore laboratory.
Applying standard methods to process results and ensure data accuracy through quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures.
Maintaining and calibrating lab and shipboard analytical instruments.
Liaising with clients and stakeholders on data collection, processing, and issue resolution.
Contributing to maintaining and improving laboratory management procedures, and undertaking a variety of tasks that have a high degree of technical difficulty.
Supporting data collection and lab operations during sea-going research voyages (up to 85 days per year, remote environments).

Relevant bachelor's degree and demonstrated previous work experience in a related field such as Chemistry or Environmental Science, with an emphasis on Analytical Chemistry.
Demonstrated ability to conduct routine and complex laboratory analyses, including maintenance and use of basic laboratory equipment, preparing reagents and calibration standards, and processing and interpreting analytical results.
Proven capability to identify and troubleshoot issues through creative problem-solving.
Experience with supervising team members, managing resources, directing tasks, and providing on-the-job training.
Excellent oral and written communications skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with team members and clients, produce data reports, and document methods.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and respectfully within multidisciplinary teams.
Ability and willingness to travel extensively, including providing operational support on domestic or international ports for periods of up to 85 days per year.
Desirable: Experience with segmented flow analysers, statistical analyses and visualisation of data using programming languages would be highly desirable.
