
Regulatory Veterinarian

- Attend race meetings, official trials, horse training locations and the Werribee International Horse Centre to provide veterinary services in accordance with RV policies and the Rules of Racing.
- Examine horses and provide expert advice to Stipendiary Stewards regarding their suitability to race, and ensure horses are presented free of prohibited substances.
- Provide leadership and oversight to veterinary staff on raceday, offering technical support and guidance to build capability across the team.
- Manage and coordinate the delivery of RV's drug control program at race meetings, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Deliver advice to Stipendiary Stewards and industry stakeholders on matters related to horse health, welfare, drug control regulations, and the application of the Rules of Racing.
- Engage and build strong rapport with key raceday stakeholders, including trainers, owners, stable veterinarians, and other industry participants.
- Lead and support projects aimed at improving racehorse safety, welfare, and racing integrity, including collaboration with peak research bodies and management of key stakeholder relationships.
- Assist the General Manager - Veterinary Services in auditing veterinary service delivery and ensuring continuous improvement across all operations.
- Prepare reports and documentation to support the Veterinary Services Team's operational and strategic initiatives.
- A degree in Veterinary Science from an Australian university or an equivalent overseas qualification recognised in Australia, with registration, or eligibility for registration, as a veterinarian in the State of Victoria.
- A minimum of five years of post-qualification experience, with broad exposure to equine practice (preferred).
- Raceday and Regulatory Experience
- Experience or demonstrated capability in managing veterinary responsibilities on raceday, including examination of horses, liaising with stewards, and managing drug control protocols.
- Understanding of the Australian Rules of Racing and experience advising on compliance, horse welfare, and prohibited substances.
- Equine Clinical Competence
- Proven ability in assessing and treating equine health issues with sound clinical judgement.
- Demonstrated capacity to make confident and accurate clinical decisions under pressure and public scrutiny, particularly in a high-stakes raceday environment.
- Communication and Relationship Management
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and professionally to a range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience in dispute resolution and negotiation, achieving favourable outcomes through concise, calm, and respectful dialogue.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across multi-disciplinary teams and with external stakeholders.
- Organisational and Administrative Capability
- Strong attention to detail with demonstrated excellence in report writing, database administration, and document management.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to rapidly changing operational demands while maintaining high standards.
- Experience supporting continuous improvement, including auditing, systems management, and project delivery.
- Emergency Response and Decision-Making
- Capability to respond appropriately and effectively to emergency situations involving horse health and welfare, both on and off course.
- Additional Requirements
