The Oncofetal Ecosystem lab is involved in research at the intersection of cancer genomics and immunology and is committed to the development of next generation of medical therapies. The research in the laboratory involves cutting edge single-cell and spatial transcriptomics technologies, bioinformatics, machine learning and innovative approaches for mRNA vaccine development.THE OPPORTUNITYThe Senior Research Officer (Level 1-3) is accountable for conducting research independently within a laboratory, with strategic guidance and oversight from the Laboratory Head. They should be working towards achieving funding to support their research projects.Salary: Up to $120,100 + 14% superannuation + salary packaging (depending on experience)Employment Type: 2- fixed-term contractSNAPSHOT OF BENEFITSGenerous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take home pay (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accom)Ample opportunities for on-going training and developmentStimulating, diverse and highly international research environmentFlexible work arrangements e.g. start / finish times18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuationA range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leaveDiscounted Health InsuranceLifestyle discounts with our community partnersWHAT YOU WILL DOESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Senior Research Officer will be making significant contributions in the following areas accompanied by an increasing level of performance within the criteria for progression from SRO1 to SRO3.Research ExcellenceSuccessful leadership of research projects resulting in first or senior authorship of published articles in refereed journals, books, conference papers / reports and other research publicationsContribution to productive research outcomes in team and collaborative projects resulting in mid-authorships on scientific publicationsNational and international recognition by invited seminar presentations and oral/poster presentations at national and international meetingsRole as a named Investigator on research proposal submissions to external funding bodiesTeam effortSupervision and mentoring of research students and junior research staffCollaboration with other research staff to develop research projectsAdministrative functions to assist efficient day-to-day operations of research labs and facilitiesInstitute ContributionsContribution to Garvan’s organisation and management through membership of committees, participation in training and mentoring programs and other activities to promote a culture of research excellence and collegialityPromotion of research links with external partnersInvolvement in professional service through active participation in scientific societiesParticipation in Garvan promotion and fund-raising events, including Young Garvan, publicABOUT YOUKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREDThe key skills and experience of a Senior Research Officer include:Shall possess an MD or PhD degree in a relevant area of scienceStrong project management skillsAbility to develop, manage and maintain internal and external working relationshipsHighly developed written and verbal communication skillsExperience in managing budgetsExperience in preparing and reporting on human ethics applicationsProficient in use of the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPointStrong problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinkingExcellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well and flexibly in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholdersExperience leading and managing teams (desirable)Experience working with clinical pathology services (desirable)Strong leadership and mentoring skills (desirable)The key requirements for the senior research officer role include:PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, genomics, or a related fieldMore than three year’s postdoctoral experience in oncology or related disciplineExtensive experience in working with clinical samples and strong record keeping experienceEstablished expertise in a wide range of computational genomics research such as molecular, cell biology techniques, including single cell and spatial methodologies, etcExtensive experience in algorithm and pipeline developmentStrong command over coding languages such R and PythonExtensive experience with histology, microscopy and spatial data analysisStrong track record of scientific first or senior author papers in high impact journalsPrevious experience in mentoring or supervising undergraduate/ PhD students or Research assistantsABOUT GARVANGarvan Institute of Medical Research is an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI) in Sydney, delivering scientific and clinical impact on a global basis and in partnership with organisations that share our vision.
