Job Title: Software Engineering Lead (.NET & Angular)
Location: Canberra, Australia
Classification: EL2 / Principal Software Engineer
Employment Type: Contract - 12 months with extensions
Clearance - NV1 ClearanceAbout the RoleThe Software Engineering Lead is responsible for driving the technical vision, architecture, and governance of a high-profile government system. This role provides strategic and hands-on leadership across the full software development lifecycle, ensuring the delivery of scalable, secure, and maintainable digital solutions. The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers, resolve technical challenges, and act as a key liaison between technical and business stakeholders.Key Responsibilities
  • Own and communicate the technical strategy for supported products, from design through BAU support.
  • Ensure scalable and maintainable systems through adherence to design patterns, governance processes, and regular technical reviews.
  • Act as an escalation point for technical decisions and support the team in resolving blockers.
  • Promote continuous development and improvement across supported applications.
  • Drive standardisation of technical practices to support business outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with best practices and relevant government and technical frameworks.
  • Serve as a conduit between technical teams, business stakeholders, and other digital teams.
  • Mentor and guide technical staff to foster growth and capability.
  • Develop and review design, architectural, and technical documentation.
  • Contribute to a high-performing, collaborative team culture.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Essential Criteria * Strong stakeholder engagement and professional relationship management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven experience in software development using .NET and Angular.
  • Demonstrated ability to support digital solutions across diverse technical and business environments.
  • Experience in developing guides, designs, architectural documents, and other technical artefacts.
Desirable Criteria * Qualifications or experience in supporting agile software development teams.
  • Experience designing cloud-native applications and/or migrating on-premises solutions to the cloud.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in .NET Core, C#, and Angular frameworks.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS) and cloud-native architecture.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and agile methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles, system architecture, and documentation standards.
