About the opportunityOpportunity for a Postdoc Research Associate to join the team at The School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia. The University of Sydney is the only Australian university to have received the highest rating of 5 out of 5 for research in the mathematical sciences in every Excellence in Research for Australia assessment to date. The University also hosts the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute, the Centre for Complex Systems, the Computational Social Science Lab, the Sydney Dynamics Group, and the Sydney Centre for Language Research, which provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations with leading experts in a variety of different fields.The Postdoctoral Research Associate will join the research group led by Professor Eduardo G. Altmann to work on the ARC funded project "Learning the meso-scale organization of complex networks". The project involves the development and application of mathematical models and computational methods to investigate structures present in large networks. We are particularly interested in using techniques from complex systems, network theory, statistical physics, mathematical modelling, and statistical inference to address problems in computational-social science and in quantitative studies of social media data. They will conduct research and/or scholarly activities under the limited supervision of the team leader and other senior academic staff, both independently and as part of a research team.Your key responsibilities will be to:
  • conduct research related to the project, independently and as part of a team.
  • publish research papers and other research outputs
  • present results in conferences and scientific events
  • organize and contribute to project-related team meetings, workshops, public events, and training sessions
  • support the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
About youWe are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who has:
  • a PhD (or near completion) in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, or related field
  • a strong track record of publishing their research in areas related to the project
  • coding and computational skills for data analysis and modelling
  • demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities both independently and as part of a team
  • the ability and a willingness to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals
  • excellent communication (written and verbal), organisational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
