Together we’re building hope and possibility for all.Find out more and .Your opportunityMission Australia is seeking an influential and highly experienced leader to take on the role of General Manager, Strategic Projects.This is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping our Housing Growth Strategy, driving our commitment to deliver 10,000 safe, affordable homes by 2030.Reporting to the Executive Housing Growth, you will lead major residential development projects and programs, respond to landmark government funding initiatives, and forge partnerships that unlock long-term housing solutions for communities across Australia. With a strong background in the full property development lifecycle, you will bring both strategic foresight and commercial acumen to one of the most significant growth agendas in Australia’s community housing sector.Your key responsibilities will be to:
  • Lead Mission Australia’s Housing Growth Strategy, overseeing major housing development projects and programs aligned with our 10,000 homes by 2030 target.
  • Identify, assess and progress new housing growth opportunities, including government funding initiatives, tenders, and partnerships.
  • Oversee major tender responses and negotiations, ensuring strong governance, risk management, and alignment with Mission Australia’s values.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with government, developers, financiers, and community partners to drive housing growth.
  • Provide commercial and financial leadership, including feasibility assessments, budget management, and debt/equity raising.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams, including legal, finance, design, operations, and development specialists, to deliver complex housing projects.
  • Develop and implement governance and reporting frameworks to ensure clear decision-making, accountability, and effective resource management.
  • Advise the Executive and Board on strategic housing opportunities, emerging service models, and policy directions to strengthen Mission Australia’s housing impact.
Requirements for success
  • Extensive senior leadership experience (10–15 years) in residential property or housing development, ideally within the community housing or not-for-profit sector.
  • Proven expertise across the full property development lifecycle, from feasibility and financing through to construction, delivery, and operationalisation.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, including financial modelling, forecasting, and leading complex negotiations with government, developers, and financiers.
  • Demonstrated success in leading large, multi-disciplinary teams and managing resources across legal, finance, design, and operations functions.
  • In-depth knowledge of social and affordable housing systems in Australia, including government funding programs, policy frameworks, and market trends.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build and sustain strategic partnerships at senior levels.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience advising executives and boards on complex strategic and commercial issues.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in property, economics, finance, law, engineering, architecture, or a related discipline.
