About the RoleThe School Counsellor at Canberra Grammar School plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development of students by providing guidance and support. This position works in close partnership with teachers, parents, and other professionals to help students thrive both academically and socially, and to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school community.The School Counsellor draws on a broad range of methods and interventions including individual casework, group work, advocacy, research and policy development, community and professional education, and critical incident management. They develop and implement strategies to support students in navigating a wide range of social, emotional and behavioural challenges that may affect their wellbeing, engagement, and learning outcomes. The School Counsellor provides both proactive and responsive support, working directly with students experiencing emotional or behavioural challenges, while also contributing to whole school wellbeing initiatives.In addition to individual support, the School Counsellor contributes to whole-school wellbeing initiatives, supports strategic planning through the use of wellbeing data, and collaborates on the design and evaluation of preventative and responsive programs.The School Counsellor works within their professional scope of practice and in close collaboration with the School Psychologist team and other allied health professionals.The role requires initiative, sound professional judgment, and a high level of discretion in addressing issues related to the wellbeing of students. Within the school, this position works closely with the Psychologists, Learning Development Team and Director of Student Care & Development and School Operations, Campus Directors, Chaplaincy Team and Heads of Student Houses.About YouYou are dedicated, passionate and possess the following:
  • A relevant tertiary degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or Psychotherapy
  • Demonstrated experience working as a school counsellor or in a similar role
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting students with complex needs
  • Good knowledge and understanding of diversity of the student population and school community (e.g. CALD, ATSI, disadvantage, disability, giftedness etc) and principles and practices for inclusion
  • Proven capacity to respond effectively to critical incidents involving students
  • Demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Understanding of legal, ethical and professional responsibilities and how to apply them in a school setting

  • Appropriate qualifications
  • Excellent written English and effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent technological literacy across a range of applications
  • Current First Aid qualifications, or willingness to obtain
  • A valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People Card
  • A current National Police Check; and
  • Full working rights within Australia
