With a booming, culturally rich and diverse community, and less than an hour's drive from the CBD (still within the bounds of Myki and ride-sharing), Melbourne's North is fastThe Role:A fantastic opportunity exists for an experienced and suitably qualified Medical Scientist to join the Haematology Department at Northern Pathology Victoria located at Northern Health in Epping, in a Permanent 0.4 FTE Part-Time capacity. The successful applicant must have well developed Morphology skills and a range of knowledge and experience with diagnostic assays, procedures and instrumentation used in Automated Haematology and Blood Transfusion.The role is responsible for the reliable, accurate and timely provision of pathology results in Morphology, Automated Haematology and Blood Transfusion at Northern Pathology Victoria (NPV).The role and responsibilities are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the values, quality objectives, performance goals, delegations, policies, procedures, and operations of NPV and in line with the Northern Health “Code of Conduct”.The major duties and/or responsibilities and the Key Performance Indicators as outlined in the scope of the position description.The incumbent may be required to perform other job-related duties as delegated by the Principal and Senior Scientists in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.This position is responsible for:
  • Reliable, accurate and efficient performance of a wide range of diagnostic assays by automated and manual methods
  • Blood Film Morphology, Automated Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion
  • Performing assays in accordance with documented procedures as outlined in the Quality Management System
  • Participates in a seven-day, 24-hour shift roster and on-call, including weekends and public holidays
Other duties as Northern Pathology Victoria broadens its scope of testing.To be successful in this role you will have:
  • Bachelor degree of Applied Science (Laboratory Medicine) or equivalent from a tertiary institution recognised by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS). Higher qualifications in related fields are desirable
  • A minimum 3 years of recent experience in Blood Film reporting, Automated Haematology and Blood Transfusion in a large medical pathology laboratory providing services to a tertiary hospital
  • Strong commitment to a high quality of care and continuous professional development
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team and independently with a proven ability to plan and prioritise work effectively to meet deadlines
  • High level of interpersonal, leadership, organisational and communication skills with a well-developed capacity to adapt to continues change and liaise effectively with staff
  • Capable of performing all laboratory investigations, including instrument operation and understand the principles of analytical methods used
  • Recognises and understands the clinical significance of results which should be communicated to the requesting medical offer and other staff
  • Be aware of, and comply with, NPAAC and NATA standards and other relevant standards and guidelines
