This is part of DAFF's broader commitment under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap to transform how government works with Indigenous communitiesAbout the RoleThe Indigenous Data Governance Specialist will provide expert advice and work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to ensure that data governance practices are culturally appropriate and aligned with community priorities.You will support embedding Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles across DAFF's policies, systems, and decision-making processes, while advising on pathways for Indigenous communities to access and utilise government-held data.Key Duties
  • Facilitate co-design and implementation of Indigenous Data Governance mechanisms with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Advise and draft Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles into DAFF programs, policies, and data initiatives.
  • Support and deliver capability-building activities for DAFF staff and Indigenous community members.
  • Improve access and transparency for Indigenous communities regarding DAFF-held data.
  • Draft executive briefings, progress reports, and strategic recommendations.
  • Provide cultural expertise to enhance cultural safety and understanding in DAFF's practices.
  • Contribute Indigenous perspectives and priorities in all relevant data policy discussions
Essential Attributes / Skills / Experience
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to build partnerships and shared decision-making.
  • Proven track record in implementing governance frameworks, policies, or initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (Priority Reforms Three and Four).
  • Experience providing cultural advice to senior leaders.
  • High-level leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills
Desirable Skills / Experience
  • Qualifications in Indigenous governance, public policy, community engagement, or data management.
  • Preference for candidates who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Previous experience in a similar role within the federal government
EL1 hourly rate contract, 6-months + possible extension
