We have a newly created role available for an experienced Work Health and Safety Coordinator who will support the Manager People and Culture in managing Council's Work Health and Safety (WHS) framework, leading the development of a safe work culture, ensuring compliance with legislation, and enhancing WHS performance through strategic advice, policy development, effective injury management, and leadership of the WHS team. Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
  • Provide high-level support, advice, and coaching to managers and supervisors on WHS matters, including policy compliance and safety legislation.
  • Support and strengthen a “Safety First” culture, including oversight and improvements to Council's WHS Management System.
  • Lead the development, review and implementation of WHS policies, procedures, and documentation in consultation with stakeholders.
  • Lead the Work Health and Safety Committee to develop, implement, and monitor strategies that promote a safe work environment and drive continuous improvement in WHS practices across the organisation.
  • Lead notifiable incident response (contractor and Council) to ensure timely investigation, compliance with reporting requirements, implementation of corrective actions, and the prevention of future incidents through improved safety practices.
  • Advance safety culture by assisting in the induction of new employees with safety and WHS matters, providing general WHS training to staff, and attending toolbox talks and team meetings.
Your knowledge and experience will include:
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in a similar position, including successfully leading a team
  • Sound and thorough knowledge of NSW Work Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Standards, Advisory Standards and Industry Codes of Practice systems relating to WHS.
  • Thorough knowledge of risk management practices and processes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Work Health and Safety/Rehabilitation and Return to Work environment.
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety or other relevant discipline, with demonstrated extensive experience in a similar role building and maintaining a strong “Safety First” culture.
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding and working knowledge of relevant WHS legislation and standards
  • Demonstrated experience in the supervision of staff and effective team leadership.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills and ability to provide excellent customer service and deliver quality service outcomes as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Local Government Act, Regulations, functions and associated legislation, would be highly regarded
  • Demonstrated high level of diplomacy and discretion in dealing with confidential information.
  • Excellent organisation skills and ability to plan and prioritise multiple projects while consistently meeting agreed timeframes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Work Health Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity and Cultural Diversity principles.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, with experience in the MS Office suite of software (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Current Drivers Licence
