The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) features 16 beds dedicated to both adult and paediatric patients. They manage over 800 acute admissions annually, including 50–60 paediatric cases and approximately 100 elective procedural admissions. In addition to providing comprehensive intensive care, the ICU offers a range of Outreach Services to support patients across the health service.Clinical Excellence and Collaborative Care
The ICU handles a diverse and complex caseload, encompassing trauma, interventional cardiology, general surgery, infectious diseases, and tropical and complex medical conditions. Paediatric patients receive collaborative care in partnership with local paediatricians and are closely supported by tertiary Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) specialists from a neighbouring hospital.Education and Professional Development

Currently undergoing a $250 million redevelopment of the Base Hospital, which will add an additional 112 inpatient beds to the already existing large facility and expand outpatient and support services. Clinicians are exposed to a challenging and rewarding clinical case mix, including busy inpatient and outpatient services in general medicine, paediatrics, surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and mental health. AHPRA Registered Intensivist – FCICM
CICM Substantially Comparable
